Community Iftar
WHAT: Interfaith Community Iftar
WHERE: Islamic Center of New England, 74 Chase Drive, Sharon, MA
WHEN: Sunday, August 14th at 7:15 p.m.
WHY: Join the Sharon community to celebrate the holy Islamic month of Ramadan with our Muslim neighbors by sharing an iftar (breaking of the fast) meal together this Sunday. The food promises to be delightfully delicious, and the company friendly and fun!
Youth LEAD (formerly Interfaith Action) and SPN are reaching out to the Sharon community to spread the word that the Islamic Center of New England (ICNE) is inviting the public to attend an iftar at 7:15 PM on Sunday, August 14th. Each evening during the month of Ramadan an iftar or break-fast takes place. The ICNE has extended a special invitation to the entire community, in hopes that people will come to see the mosque and share in the break-fast.
In case you are wondering what happens at an iftar, it usually starts with the sharing of food, often dates and a drink, followed by a sunset prayer which lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. The prayers are followed by a delicious meal of both cooked and uncooked food (vegetarian options are available). During the prayers and the meal, women and men generally are on different sides of the room, though sometimes there are tables where some men and women can sit together during the meal. Visitors do not need to wear head coverings, but might want to cover their arms, as would be the case in many houses of worship. If you are unable to stay for the entire iftar, it is possible to leave early.
We are hoping to see some new faces at the mosque, so if you have not been there, we especially encourage you to come and support interfaith and multicultural peace and understanding. If you have any questions, please contact Janet Penn at 781-784-0651 or email her. To RSVP (so that they can plan the food requirements accordingly), please email Dr. Waqar Cheema.
Sincerely,
Beth Hoke, SPN Coordinator
